| Chieftains of Ardgour |
|
Robin Maclean of Ardgour is the chieftain of Ardgour. The Macleans of Ardgour were granted title to the lands of Ardgour by James IV in 1494 and have owned the estate continuously since then. At the time of the 1745 uprising the Laird was a minor and a neighboring Chieftain led the clan at Culloden. Because of this, and unusually for the West Highlands, the estate was not forfeited in those troubled times and is one of the few where uninterrupted ownership can be traced for nearly 600 years. The family lived on the site of Ardgour House since 1542 and the cellars of the present building date from that time. |
