Recording the History of a World Wide Family

Chiefs of the Clan Maclean

Scottish clans still loosely honor the feudal, family-based system of self-government developed by their ancient ancestors. The hereditary line of Maclean Chiefs traces back to first recognized Chief, Gilleain na Tuaighe, in 1174

Untill the modern age, the Chief was the dominant authority over the clan. Each clan was subject to its Chief, and most clans had branches (often refered to as “houses”); the branches were headed by a Chieftain whose loyalty was to the clan's Chief. The rual nature of Scotland's Highlands, particularly the Western Isles, allowed the clans to opperate a miniture kingdoms and were virtually autonomous for centuries.
