Sir Charles Fitzroy Maclean, Bt

Sir Charles Fitzroy Maclean became the 9th Baronet of Duart and Morvern and 25th Chief of the Clan Maclean on the 5th of July in 1847 upon the death of his father, Sir Fitzroy Jeffreys Grafton Maclean, Bt.

Sir Charles was born on the 14th of October in 1789 and graduated from Eton College and attended the Royal Military College, Sandhurst for a time before purchasing his commission as a lieutenant. After completing his education, Sir Charles joined the Scots Guards in 1816.

During his military career, Sir Charles Commanded both the 81 Regiment of Foot and the 13th Light Dragoons. Throughout his career, Sir Charles was a prominent critic of the proposal to abolish Highland Garb in military of the United Kingdom. Sir Charles retired from military service with the Army in 1846 having earned the rank of Colonel.

On May 10th in 1831 Sir Charles Fitzroy Maclean married Emily Eleanor Marsham in West Kent. She was the daughter of the Hon. Rev. Jacob Marsham, DD, the Canon of Windsor. They had five children. Lady Emily Maclean passed away in 1838, only seven years after their marriage. Sir Charles never remarried.

The daughter of Sir Charles and Lady Emily, Fanny Henrietta Maclean married Admiral Sir A.W.A. Hood of the Royal Navy. She was styled as the Baroness Hood of Avalon.

Sir Charles Fitzroy Maclean, Bt died on the 27th of December in 1883 at West Cliffe House in Folkestone. His titles passed to Sir Fitzroy Donald Maclean, Bt, CB, KCB. One journalist writing for the Folkestone Chronicle noted at the time, "A more liberal-minded gentleman, one more generally respected, we shall not have to reside with us again, and whilst his advanced age rendered death a visitor that must be expected, the community will feel that it has sustained a loss in this high souled gentleman which will not soon be replaced."
